Breaking Free from the Stress Trap:
The Power of Setting Boundaries
As a health and wellness coach, personal trainer, and the founder of Momentum Fit in Ponte Vedra Beach, I've dedicated my career to helping individuals achieve their goals and improve their overall well-being. I am now in the stage of my career where I am so focused on being a good leader to my team and their professional development that I forget I need to treat myself like one of my clients. One of the most common challenges I encounter with my clients is the difficulty of setting boundaries. We often feel obligated to say yes to everything, leading to overwhelming schedules and constant stress.
My Struggles with Setting Boundaries
I've struggled with setting boundaries throughout my career. As a business owner and entrepreneur, I often felt the need to be involved in every aspect of my work. I found it difficult to delegate tasks or say no to additional responsibilities. I believed I shouldn’t burden others with it if I could do it myself, which was a big limiting belief for me. However, I realized this mindset contributed to my stress and burnout. I was constantly overwhelmed and struggling to keep up with everything. It was clear that I needed to make some changes to my approach.
The Importance of Saying No
Learning to say no is a powerful tool for managing stress and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. It allows you to prioritize your time and energy, focusing on the most important tasks and activities. When you say no, you're essentially saying yes to yourself and your well-being. I like to reframe this thought for my clients about being more selective when saying yes.
The Benefits of Delegating - for High-Level Executives and Entrepreneurs
Delegating tasks can also be a valuable strategy for reducing stress and increasing efficiency. By entrusting certain responsibilities to others, you can free up your time to focus on more strategic or high-value tasks. Delegating can also help you build a stronger team and develop your employees' skills. I still struggle with this but I am improving. I have a fantastic team, and they help me support the business and operations by taking some of the less critical items off my plate so I am free to focus on business growth and development.
Performing a Time Audit
It's helpful to perform a time audit to identify areas where you can set boundaries and delegate tasks. This involves tracking how you spend your time throughout the day to identify time-wasting activities and areas where you can be more efficient.
Prioritizing Self-Care
In addition to setting boundaries and delegating tasks, prioritizing self-care is essential. This includes activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being, such as exercise, meditation, and spending time in nature. Self-care is essential for managing stress and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. When you prioritize self-care, you invest in yourself and your ability to cope with life's challenges.
Examples of Self-Care Activities
There are many different ways to practice self-care. Here are a few examples:
Physical self-care: Exercise (my favorite), healthy eating (second favorite because I love cooking and food), sleep, relaxation techniques (e.g., yoga, meditation, deep breathing)
Mental and emotional self-care: Spending time in nature, journaling, creative activities (e.g., painting, writing), seeking social support (I have a fantastic therapist - Lindsey Bennett)
Spiritual self-care: Connecting with your values and beliefs, practicing mindfulness or spirituality
Scheduling Self-Care
It can be challenging to find time for self-care, especially when you have a busy schedule. Here are some tips for scheduling self-care activities:
Prioritize self-care: Treat self-care as a non-negotiable part of your routine.
Schedule self-care activities: Block out time for self-care activities in your calendar.
Start small: Begin with short self-care sessions and gradually increase the time you spend on self-care.
Find a self-care buddy: Partner with a friend or family member to practice self-care together.
My Personal Journey
I've made significant progress in setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care. While it's still a challenge, I've learned the importance of saying no and delegating tasks. I've also become more mindful of how I spend my time and have implemented strategies to reduce stress and improve my overall well-being. I have a good relationship with my team members, and they let me know when I am saying yes to too much, which holds me accountable.
